St. Mary's Catholic Primary School

Intent, Implementation and Impact

The intent for Art at St Mary’s is to ensure all children produce creative and imaginative work and have the opportunity to explore and express their work and works of others. Children will become confident in a variety of skills and techniques as well as become familiar with famous artists, designers and craft makers.   We want children to build confidence in discussing their work and that of others.

St Mary’s is a unique rural school and we aim to use our outdoor learning environment to maximise the creativity and imagination of the children along with developing their social and emotional wellbeing.

The implementation is how we deliver what we want the children to know by the time they leave St Mary's.  We use Kapow as a scheme of work and adapt it to suit the needs of the school and children.  Lessons are sequential and work on a spiral meaning they get harder throughout the years and build upon previous learning.  Key skills are revisited and built open continuously and progression is clearly evident on the progression map link.

The impact of this new curriculum has been great.  The staff and children really enjoy their art lessons which are varied and skilful.  The results and the children's confidence has improved overtime which shows in their progress throughout their sketchbooks.
